Although cost and location are significant considerations when evaluating vet tech schools, they are not the only significant ones when making your comparisons. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make a final selection. We have provided several in this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll go over the varied responsibilities of veterinary assistants and techs and the training options offered.

The Role of a Veterinary Tech and Assistant

Part of your determination might be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the principal determiner will most likely be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the immediate supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are numerous tasks that they can perform within the Dardanelle AR veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or perform surgeries. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the standard vet practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Dardanelle AR. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complex activities, for instance assisting with surgeries. A few of their regular responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training compared to assistants and usually obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more complicated tasks, for example assisting with surgical procedures or administering medicine. All states presently mandate that vet technicians pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary techs and for the most part carry out the same job functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires 4 years. Therefore the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Some may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Dardanelle AR area research facilities also.

Online Veterinary Courses

attending vet tech school online in Dardanelle ARAn alternative that might make sense for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full-time while attending veterinary school is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using multiple methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that part can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Dardanelle AR veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenditures, for example for commuting and study materials, may be more affordable compared to more standard classroom programs. Just make sure that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online veterinary tech or assistant program may be the perfect choice for you.

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Arkansas and across the USA, you should ask some qualifying questions to help fine tune your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our opening, many future students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already pointed out other essential qualifiers, for example accreditation and internship programs. And of course you want to enroll in a college that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Dardanelle AR vet assistant and tech schools that you are looking at.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s imperative that you verify that the vet assistant or tech school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously mentioned, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough review process that ensures you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not obtainable for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is often a requirement for employment for many Dardanelle AR veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary trade school or college and program you enroll in must have an excellent reputation within the vet field. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include checking with online school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Arkansas school licensing department if there have been any grievances or infractions regarding your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, get in touch with some Dardanelle AR veterinarians that you may wish to work for after you get your training. Find out what they think about your school selections. They may even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best means to get practical hands on experience as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a medical environment. Ask if the colleges you are considering have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the practical training, but an internship can also help build connections in the local Dardanelle AR veterinarian community and assist in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary technician or assistant college may be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A low rate might signify that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, check that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might signify that the Dardanelle AR program has an excellent reputation within the vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate may indicate that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you most likely will get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Dardanelle AR colleges you are researching what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You might also want to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Okay, we already talked about location, but there are several more points to consider on the topic. If you are planning to commute to your veterinary technician classes from home or work, you have to confirm that the driving time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Dardanelle AR campus is located in or close by a larger city. Also, if you do choose to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges particularly for state and community colleges. Of course attending online classes could be an option that will give you more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s essential that you find out if the Arkansas veterinarian programs you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are offered near Dardanelle AR prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies. You may discover that an online school is the best solution to fit your veterinary training into your active life.

A Little Bit About Dardanelle AR

Dardanelle, Arkansas

Dardanelle is a city in Yell County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 4,745 at the 2010 census. Along with Danville, it serves as a county seat for Yell County.[4] It is located near Lake Dardanelle.

Dardanelle is one of the oldest cities in the state of Arkansas. Officially incorporated in 1855, Dardanelle celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2005. However, the area had been settled for years before that, first being established as a river town in the mid-18th century. It is Yell County's dual county seat, sharing that title with Danville.

The Treaty of Council Oaks was signed on June 24, 1823 on what is now Front Street beneath two huge oak trees (102 feet high and 400–500 years old). Under orders of President James Monroe, U.S. Army Colonel David Brearly and Arkansas territorial secretary Robert Crittendon met with Chief Black Fox and several Cherokee leaders to determine boundaries. As a result of the treaty, the Cherokees gave up all of their land in Arkansas south of the Arkansas River. One of the trees was destroyed in the early 1990s in a flood, but the other is still standing. The site is now a city park.[6]
