But just how do you approach reviewing and contrasting programs so that you can make the proper choice? Many potential students start their due diligence process by searching for colleges that are near their residences. When they have found some area colleges, they determine which ones have the cheapest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and cost are important factors when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your assessments. Factors such as internship programs and accreditation need to be considered as well. The point is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make an ultimate selection. We have furnished several within this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll talk about the various responsibilities of veterinary techs and assistants and the training options available.

The Responsibilities of a Veterinary Tech and Assistant

Part of your decision may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the primary factor will most likely be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are many tasks that they can perform within the Greenwood AR veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they may only furnish assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the conventional vet practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Greenwood AR. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more involved undertakings, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their normal duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training compared with assistants and generally acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are involved in more complicated activities, for example assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states currently require vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and essentially perform the same work functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes 4 years. So the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. Some may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Greenwood AR area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in Greenwood ARAn option that might make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full time while going to vet school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are offered through the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The course of study is taught using various venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that segment can usually be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Greenwood AR veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary costs, for instance for traveling and study supplies, can be lower compared to more standard classroom courses. Just make sure that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant fashion, an online vet technician or assistant school may be the perfect option for you.

Things to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technician Colleges

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Arkansas and across the USA, you should ask some important questions in order to narrow down your list of options. As we mentioned in our introduction, many future students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have already pointed out other important qualifiers, such as accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you need to enroll in a program that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the list of questions that you need to ask the Greenwood AR veterinary technician and assistant colleges that you are considering.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the vet assistant or technician program you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously mentioned, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a thorough screening process that confirms you will obtain a quality education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not offered for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is often a prerequisite for employment for many Greenwood AR vet practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or vocational school and program you enroll in must have an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community. You can start your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include checking with internet school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Arkansas school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations relating to your targeted schools. As a final pointer, get in touch with some Greenwood AR veterinary clinics that you may wish to work for after you get your training. Find out what they think of your school choices. They might even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best approach to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a professional environment. Find out if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with local veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the practical training, but an internship may also help develop connections in the local Greenwood AR veterinarian community and aid in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Provided?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet technician or assistant program may be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are reviewing. A lower rate may signify that the teachers were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that some students were unhappy with the program and quit. Next, check that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might signify that the Greenwood AR program has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might mean that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you probably will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Request from the Greenwood AR schools you are researching what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to participate in a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between instructors and students. Get evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Okay, we previously talked about location, but there are a few more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your vet tech classes from home or work, you must make certain that the driving time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Greenwood AR college is located in or near a large city. Also, if you do choose to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges especially for community and state colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes might be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s important that you find out if the Arkansas veterinary programs you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you require are offered near Greenwood AR prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you might miss because of work, sickness or family issues. You may find that an online program is the ideal way to fit your vet training into your active life.
