After all, you must find and enroll in a college that will deliver the necessary training to ensure that you can succeed as a vet assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you go about analyzing and comparing colleges so that you can make the best choice? Many potential students start their due diligence process by looking for schools that are near their homes. After they have found some local colleges, they determine which ones have the most affordable tuition and focus on those. Although location and expense are significant concerns when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only critical ones when making your evaluations. Qualifiers such as accreditation and internship programs should be evaluated as well. The point is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make a final decision. We have provided several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll discuss the varied responsibilities of veterinary assistants and techs and the training options available.

The Role of a Veterinary Technician and Assistant

Part of your preference may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the main determiner will probably be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the immediate supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are many jobs that they can perform within the Hector AR veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose conditions, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the conventional vet practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and training prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have completed a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Hector AR. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more involved tasks, such as assisting with surgeries. Some of their typical responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training compared to assistants and usually obtain a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more complicated tasks, for example assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states currently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet technicians and basically carry out the same job functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires four years to complete. So the only real difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Many may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Hector AR area research facilities as well.

Veterinary Online Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in Hector ARAn approach that may be a solution for those with a busy schedule or who are working full time while attending veterinary school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are provided through the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using multiple venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many vet tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Hector AR veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenditures, for instance for travel and study supplies, may be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just make sure that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online veterinary tech or assistant program may be the perfect option for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Tech Degree Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Arkansas and across the United States, you must ask some relevant questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we discussed in our opening, many future students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously touched on other significant qualifiers, such as accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you want to select a college that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other factors are reviewed in the list of questions that you should ask the Hector AR vet technician and assistant programs that you are considering.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s imperative that you make sure that the veterinary tech or assistant college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously mentioned, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding screening process that verifies you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is often a prerequisite for employment for many Hector AR veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian vocational school or college and program you enroll in must have an excellent reputation within the veterinarian field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include checking with online school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Arkansas school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or infractions relating to your specific schools. As a final suggestion, contact some Hector AR vet clinics that you may wish to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They may even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best approach to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional setting. Find out if the colleges you are considering have internship programs arranged with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable as far as the practical training, but an internship may also help establish connections in the local Hector AR veterinarian community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant college can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are reviewing. A lower rate may mean that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the schools have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could signify that the Hector AR program has an exceptional reputation within the vet community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might signify that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you may get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Hector AR schools you are researching what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to participate in some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Yes, we previously covered location, but there are several more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to drive to your veterinary technician classes from work or home, you need to make certain that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Hector AR school is located in or close by a larger city. Also, if you do opt to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs especially for community and state colleges. On the other hand, attending classes online might be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s imperative that you find out if the Arkansas vet schools you are looking at offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you need are available near Hector AR prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family responsibilities. You may discover that an online college is the best solution to fit your veterinary training into your busy life.

A Little Bit About Hector AR

USS Hector (AR-7)

The USS Hector (AR-7) was a repair ship that served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1987.

Hector was launched 11 November 1942 by the Los Angeles Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, San Pedro, California and sponsored by Mrs. Schuyler F. Helm. Hector was commissioned 7 February 1944, with Commander J. W. Long in command.

After shakedown along the West Coast, the new repair ship sailed for the Pacific, reaching Pearl Harbor 9 April 1944. She remained at Pearl Harbor effecting repairs on various ships, primarily landing craft, until she departed for Eniwetok on 5 June. Arriving there 13 June, Hector spent the summer at Eniwetok and then sailed for Ulithi 30 September. Her biggest repair job of the war came to her 27 October at Ulithi as the cruiser USS Houston , torpedoed twice by Japanese submarines, was towed alongside. Although hampered by a severe typhoon season which twice sent her out to sea for safety, Hector managed to repair Houston by the end of the year besides aiding many other smaller craft.
