The Responsibilities of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your determination might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the principal determiner will undoubtedly be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the immediate supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are a number of functions that they can perform within the West Memphis AR veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the conventional vet practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have undergone a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near West Memphis AR. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more complicated undertakings, such as assisting with surgeries. A few of their typical duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or handling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more advanced training compared to assistants and generally acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their basic job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complex activities, for example assisting with surgeries or administering medication. All states presently require vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary techs and for the most part carry out the same job functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually takes 4 years to complete. So the only real difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Many may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or West Memphis AR area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Degree Programs

And since many vet technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that part can usually be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area West Memphis AR veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenses, for instance for traveling and study supplies, may be lower compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just be sure that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is included for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online vet technician or assistant school may be the perfect choice for you.

But we have previously mentioned other important qualifiers, which include internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you want to enroll in a school that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are addressed in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the West Memphis AR veterinary assistant and tech colleges that you are considering.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s imperative that you verify that the veterinary tech or assistant college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously mentioned, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a rigorous screening process that ensures you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is in many cases a precondition for employment for a number of West Memphis AR veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinary trade school or college and program you enroll in must have an excellent reputation within the vet community. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include looking on online school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Arkansas school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations relating to your targeted schools. As a final tip, call some West Memphis AR veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think of your school selections. They may even recommend some colleges not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective means to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a medical environment. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable regarding the practical training, but an internship can also help establish relationships in the local West Memphis AR veterinary community and assist in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or tech college may be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A low rate could indicate that the instructors were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, check that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may indicate that the West Memphis AR program has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may signify that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you most likely will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the West Memphis AR colleges you are looking at what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to participate in a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we previously discussed location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the topic. If you are going to commute to your veterinary tech classes from work or home, you have to confirm that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the West Memphis AR campus is located in or close by a larger city. Also, if you do choose to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes might be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s imperative that you ascertain if the Arkansas veterinary programs you are exploring offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Others might only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you need are available near West Memphis AR prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss because of work, sickness or family emergencies. You may find that an online program is the best solution to fit your vet education into your busy life.
