After all, you have to locate and enroll in a program that will provide the appropriate training so that you can succeed as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you approach reviewing and contrasting schools so that you can make the ideal selection? Many future students launch their due diligence process by looking for colleges that are near their homes. When they have located some nearby schools, they find out which ones have the lowest tuition and focus on those. Although location and cost are significant concerns when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your assessments. Qualifications such as internship programs and accreditation need to be looked into as well. The point is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make an ultimate decision. We have furnished several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll discuss the different responsibilities of vet assistants and techs and the training alternatives offered.
The Function of a Veterinary Technician and Assistant
Among the first decisions that you will have to make is if you want to train as a vet assistant, technologist or technician. Part of your determination may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the principal determiner will most likely be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are numerous tasks that they can carry out within the Buena Park CA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the conventional vet practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training prerequisites for each specialization.
- Vet Assistants in most instances will have completed a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Buena Park CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more complicated undertakings, such as assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their typical functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
- Vet Technicians receive more extensive training in contrast to assistants and usually earn a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are included in more involved functions, such as assisting with surgical procedures or administering medicine. All states presently require veterinary technicians pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
- Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and for the most part carry out the same job functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires 4 years. Therefore the main difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
Veterinary technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. A number may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Buena Park CA area research facilities as well.
Online Veterinarian Courses
An approach that might make sense for those with a busy schedule or who are working full time while going to veterinarian school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are offered by means of the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using multiple methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can usually be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Buena Park CA veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenses, for example for traveling and study supplies, may be more affordable compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just be sure that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is included for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant fashion, an online veterinary tech or assistant program may be the ideal choice for you.
Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Tech Programs
At this point you should have decided on which veterinary credential that you want to attain, and if you want to study online or attend a program on campus. Since there are a large number of veterinary community colleges, vocational and technical schools in California as well as across the United States, you must ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we mentioned in our opening, many potential students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have previously pointed out other essential qualifiers, for example accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you need to enroll in a program that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Buena Park CA vet assistant and technician programs that you are considering.
Is the Vet College Accredited? It’s imperative that you make sure that the vet technician or assistant program you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously stated, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a demanding screening process that ensures you will obtain a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is in many cases a prerequisite for employment for a number of Buena Park CA vet clinics and hospitals.
What is the School’s Reputation? The veterinarian vocational school or college and program you select should have an outstanding reputation within the veterinary field. You can start your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for testimonials from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include looking on internet school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the California school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations involving your specific schools. As a final tip, call some Buena Park CA veterinary clinics that you might wish to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They might even recommend some colleges not on your list.
Are Internships Offered? The most effective approach to get practical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a medical setting. Ask if the programs you are looking at have internship programs set up with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Most veterinary medicine programs require practical training and a large number provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable regarding the practical training, but an internship may also help establish associations in the local Buena Park CA vet community and help in the search for a job after graduation.
Is there a Job Assistance Program? Searching for a job after graduating from a vet assistant or tech college can be difficult without the help of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are considering. A low rate may indicate that the instructors were unqualified to teach the course of study or that some students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could mean that the Buena Park CA program has an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could mean that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.
How Big are the Classes? If the classes are larger in size, you most likely will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Request from the Buena Park CA colleges you are researching what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to sit in on a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.
Where is the College Located? Okay, we previously discussed location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary tech classes from work or home, you have to make sure that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Buena Park CA school is located close by or within a large city. Also, if you do decide to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees particularly for community and state colleges. Of course taking online classes might be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.
Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule? And finally, it’s important that you find out if the California veterinary colleges you are looking at offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you require are available near Buena Park CA before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies. You may find that an online college is the best way to fit your vet education into your busy life.

Original Spanish explorers settled on the enormous ranchos by land grants made by the King of Spain. The rancho’s adobe headquarters lay on what is now Los Coyotes Country Club’s golf course.
The area was transferred from Spanish authority to Mexican rule in 1822 and ceded to the United States in 1848 at the end of the Mexican–American War. California was granted statehood in 1850. Americanization further expanded in the area after completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 and its connection to Los Angeles in 1875. By then, Abel Stearns had acquired Rancho Los Coyotes in consideration for loans made to Pio and Andrés Pico. In 1885, James A. Whitaker, a wholesale grocer from Chicago, purchased 690 acres (2.8 km2) of this land from Stearns. In 1887, Whitaker founded the City of Buena Park in conjunction with the railway development of what we now know as Orange County.
