After all, you must search for and enroll in a school that will deliver the proper training to ensure that you can be successful as a veterinary technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you tackle assessing and comparing programs so that you can make the best choice? Many future students start their due diligence process by searching for colleges that are near their residences. Once they have located some area colleges, they find out which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and expense are significant factors when evaluating vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your evaluations. Factors such as accreditation and internship programs should be looked into also. The point is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make a final choice. We have provided several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll explore the varied duties of veterinary assistants and techs and the training options available.

The Role of a Veterinary Assistant and Technician

Part of your determination may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your training, but the main factor will probably be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the direct supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are many functions that they can carry out within the Diamond Springs CA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose conditions, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they may only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the standard veterinarian practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have gone through a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Diamond Springs CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complicated undertakings, for example assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their normal duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more advanced training compared to assistants and typically acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more involved activities, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states presently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet technicians and basically carry out the same job functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires 4 years. Therefore the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Many may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Diamond Springs CA area research facilities also.

Online Veterinary Degree Programs

attending vet tech school online in Diamond Springs CAAn alternative that may make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full time while going to veterinary college is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are made available over the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using various methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can normally be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Diamond Springs CA veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenses, for example for commuting and study materials, may be lower compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just be sure that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online veterinary tech or assistant program may be the perfect option for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Training Programs

Since there are a large number of vet community colleges, vocational and trade schools in California as well as across the Country, you need to ask some relevant questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we pointed out in our opening, many future students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously pointed out other essential qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you want to select a program that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other factors are reviewed in the list of questions that you should ask the Diamond Springs CA veterinary assistant and technician programs that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s essential that you confirm that the veterinary technician or assistant college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier stated, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through an extensive screening process that verifies you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not offered for non-accredited schools. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is often a requirement for employment for a number of Diamond Springs CA veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The vet vocational school or college and program you select should have an exceptional reputation within the veterinary community. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include checking with online school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the California school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions involving your targeted schools. As a final recommendation, phone some Diamond Springs CA veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They might even suggest some schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective means to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional setting. Find out if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs set up with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial relative to the practical training, but an internship can also help establish associations in the local Diamond Springs CA vet community and aid in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Getting a job after graduating from a vet technician or assistant program can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are evaluating. A lower rate may mean that the instructors were unqualified to teach the course of study or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the schools have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could signify that the Diamond Springs CA school has an outstanding reputation within the vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could indicate that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you most likely will get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Diamond Springs CA programs you are considering what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You might also want to attend some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and find out what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Okay, we previously talked about location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the subject. If you are going to drive to your vet technician classes from home or work, you have to confirm that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Diamond Springs CA school is located close by or within a large city. Also, if you do opt to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs particularly for state and community colleges. Of course taking online classes might be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s imperative that you determine if the California veterinarian schools you are looking at offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some might only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you require are offered near Diamond Springs CA prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies. You might find that an online program is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary training into your busy life.
