Many aspiring students launch their due diligence process by looking for schools that are close to their residences. Although cost and location are significant factors when evaluating vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your assessments. The point is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make a final selection. We have provided several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll discuss the different duties of veterinary techs and assistants and the training alternatives offered.

The Responsibilities of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your determination might be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the principal determiner will undoubtedly be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are a number of functions that they can carry out within the Redding CA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or perform surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the conventional vet practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have gone through a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Redding CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complicated tasks, such as assisting with surgeries. Some of their regular responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians receive more advanced training compared to assistants and usually earn a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are engaged in more complex duties, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states presently require vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet technicians and essentially perform the same work functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires 4 years to complete. Therefore the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Many may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Redding CA area research facilities as well.

Vet Online Colleges

attending vet tech school online in Redding CAAn approach that may make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full-time while going to vet college is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are provided over the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The syllabus is taught using multiple venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that segment can usually be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area Redding CA veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, for example for travel and study materials, can be lower compared to more standard classroom programs. Just confirm that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet tech or assistant program may be the perfect option for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Technologist Programs

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, vocational and technical schools in California as well as across the Country, you should ask some qualifying questions to help narrow down your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our introduction, many prospective students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have already mentioned other important qualifiers, which include accreditation and internship programs. And of course you need to select a college that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Redding CA vet technician and assistant programs that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s imperative that you make sure that the vet assistant or tech school you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier stated, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous screening process that verifies you will obtain a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not obtainable for non-accredited programs. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited college is in many cases a precondition for employment for many Redding CA veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or trade school and program you enroll in should have an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian field. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include checking with online school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the California school licensing department if there have been any grievances or violations involving your specific schools. As a final suggestion, phone some Redding CA vet clinics that you may want to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They may even recommend one or more colleges not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective approach to get clinical hands on experience as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a professional environment. Find out if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs established with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Most veterinary medicine programs require practical training and many provide it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the practical training, but an internship may also help develop relationships in the local Redding CA veterinarian community and assist in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or technician college can be difficult without the help of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are reviewing. A lower rate might indicate that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, check that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could signify that the Redding CA program has an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could mean that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you probably will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Redding CA colleges you are considering what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to sit in on some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we previously discussed location, but there are a few more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to commute to your veterinary assistant classes from work or home, you need to make sure that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Redding CA campus is located near or in a larger city. Also, if you do decide to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for community and state colleges. Of course taking classes online may be an option that will give you more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s imperative that you find out if the California veterinarian programs you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you require are offered near Redding CA prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies. You may find that an online program is the ideal way to fit your veterinary education into your active life.

A Little Bit About Redding CA

Redding, California

Redding, officially the City of Redding, is the county seat of Shasta County, California, in the northern part of the state. It lies along the Sacramento River, is 162 miles (261 kilometers) north of Sacramento, and 120 miles (190 km) south of the Oregon border. Interstate 5 bisects the entire city, from the south to north before it approaches Shasta Lake, which is located 15 miles (24 km) to the north. The 2010 population was 89,861.[4][5] Redding is the largest city in the Shasta Cascade region, and it is the fourth-largest city in the Sacramento Valley, behind Sacramento, Elk Grove, and Roseville.

During the gold rush, the area that is now composed of Redding was called Poverty Flats. In 1868 the first land agent for the Central Pacific Railroad, a former Sacramento politician named Benjamin Bernard Redding, bought property in Poverty Flats on behalf of the railroad so that it could build a northern terminus there. In the process of building the terminus, the railroad also built a town in the same area, which they named Redding in honor of Benjamin Redding. In 1874 there was a dispute over the name by local legislatures and it was changed for a time to Reading, in order to honor Pierson B. Reading, who founded the community of Shasta, but the name was officially changed back to Redding by 1880. It has been called Redding ever since.[6]

Before European settlers came to the area, it was heavily inhabited by a tribe of Native Americans called the Wintu. At their height, the Wintu had as many as 239 villages in the Shasta County area.[7]
