After all, you must find and enroll in a school that will furnish the appropriate training to ensure that you can succeed as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you tackle analyzing and contrasting programs so that you can make the right selection? Many potential students begin their due diligence process by looking for campuses that are near their homes. Once they have located some local schools, they ascertain which ones have the most affordable tuition and hone in on those. Although expense and location are significant concerns when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your evaluations. Qualifications such as accreditation and internship programs should be considered also. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make a final selection. We have presented several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll go over the varied duties of vet techs and assistants and the training alternatives available.

The Function of a Vet Tech and Assistant

Part of your preference might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the main factor will undoubtedly be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they each work under the direct guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are many functions that they can perform within the Bartow GA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose health issues, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they may only furnish assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the typical vet practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have gone through a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Bartow GA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more complicated tasks, for example assisting with surgeries. A few of their regular functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more advanced training in contrast to assistants and typically obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are engaged in more complex functions, such as assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states presently require vet technicians pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and essentially perform the same work functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires 4 years. So the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. A number may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Bartow GA area research facilities also.

Online Veterinary Schools

attending vet tech school online in Bartow GAAn approach that may be a solution for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full-time while going to veterinary college is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are provided through the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using various venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area Bartow GA veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, for example for commuting and study supplies, can be lower compared to more standard classroom courses. Just be sure that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the perfect option for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Technologist Schools

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Georgia and across the Country, you need to ask some relevant questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our introduction, many future students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already mentioned other significant qualifiers, for example accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you want to enroll in a college that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the list of questions that you should ask the Bartow GA veterinary technician and assistant colleges that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s essential that you confirm that the veterinary assistant or tech school you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough screening process that ensures you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not obtainable for non-accredited programs. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is in many cases a requirement for employment for a number of Bartow GA veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian vocational school or college and program you enroll in should have an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include checking with internet school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Georgia school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or violations regarding your specific schools. As a final recommendation, call some Bartow GA vet clinics that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think of your school selections. They might even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective approach to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a medical environment. Find out if the colleges you are looking at have internship programs established with local veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require practical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial as far as the practical training, but an internship may also help develop associations in the local Bartow GA veterinary community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant school may be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are evaluating. A lower rate could indicate that the instructors were unqualified to teach the course of study or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the schools have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could signify that the Bartow GA college has an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might signify that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you may get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Bartow GA schools you are researching what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to participate in a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Get feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Of course, we previously covered location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your vet tech classes from home or work, you must confirm that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Bartow GA school is located near or in a larger city. In addition, if you do choose to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes may be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s important that you find out if the Georgia vet programs you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some might only be able to attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you need are available near Bartow GA before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies. You might discover that an online program is the ideal way to fit your vet education into your hectic life.

A Little Bit About Bartow GA

Bartow County, Georgia

Bartow County is a county located in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 100,157.[1] The county seat is Cartersville.[2]

Traditionally considered part of northwest Georgia, Bartow County is now included in the Atlanta metropolitan area, mainly in the southeastern part near Cartersville, which has become an exurb more than 40 miles (70 kilometers) from downtown Atlanta on I-75. It has a sole commissioner government, and is the largest county by population of the few remaining in Georgia with a sole commissioner.

Bartow County was created from the Cherokee lands of the Cherokee County territory on December 3, 1832, and named Cass County, after General Lewis Cass (1782–1866) Secretary of War under President Andrew Jackson, Minister to France and Secretary of State under President James Buchanan,[3] who was instrumental in the removal of Native Americans from the area. However, the county was renamed on December 6, 1861 in honor of Francis S. Bartow because of Cass's support of the Union,[4] even though Bartow never visited in the county, living 200 miles away near Savannah all of his life. Cass had supported the doctrine of popular sovereignty, the right of each state to determine its own laws independently of the Federal government, ironcially the platform of conservative Southerners who removed his name. The first county seat was at Cassville, but after the burning of the county courthouse and the Sherman Occupation, the seat moved to Cartersville, where it remains.
