Part of your decision might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the principal determiner will most likely be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the direct guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are a number of jobs that they can perform within the Eatonton GA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose health issues, or perform surgeries. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the conventional veterinarian practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and education requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have undergone a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Eatonton GA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more complex undertakings, for example assisting with surgeries. Some of their normal functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians go through more advanced training compared with assistants and normally obtain a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more complicated functions, for instance assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states presently require vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet technicians and for the most part carry out the same job functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually takes four years. Therefore the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Some may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Eatonton GA area research facilities as well.

And since most veterinary technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can typically be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Eatonton GA veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, for instance for traveling and study supplies, can be cheaper compared to more standard classroom programs. Just make certain that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent mode, an online veterinary tech or assistant school may be the right choice for you.

And obviously you need to select a program that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are covered in the list of questions that you need to ask the Eatonton GA veterinary technician and assistant programs that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s essential that you verify that the veterinary tech or assistant program you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously mentioned, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough screening process that ensures you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not obtainable for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is in many cases a precondition for employment for a number of Eatonton GA veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian vocational school or college and program you select should have an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include looking on internet school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Georgia school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations concerning your targeted schools. As a final tip, contact some Eatonton GA veterinarians that you might want to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They may even recommend one or more schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best way to obtain practical hands on training as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a clinical setting. Find out if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs set up with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial as far as the practical training, but an internship may also help establish relationships in the local Eatonton GA vet community and assist in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or technician program can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are considering. A low rate may signify that the teachers were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, verify that the colleges have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could signify that the Eatonton GA school has an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could mean that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you probably will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Request from the Eatonton GA schools you are researching what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to participate in a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and teachers. Get feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Okay, we already talked about location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are going to commute to your vet tech classes from work or home, you have to make sure that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Eatonton GA college is located in or near a large city. In addition, if you do opt to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges particularly for community and state colleges. Of course attending classes online might be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s important that you find out if the Georgia veterinarian colleges you are considering offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, many students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are available near Eatonton GA prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family issues. You might discover that an online college is the best way to fit your vet training into your busy life.
