The Responsibilities of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your decision might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the principal factor will most likely be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the immediate direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are many tasks that they can perform within the Lawrenceville GA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the typical veterinarian practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and training requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have undergone a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Lawrenceville GA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more complex tasks, for instance assisting with surgeries. A few of their typical responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians receive more extensive training in contrast to assistants and generally acquire a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated tasks, such as assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states currently mandate that vet technicians pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and basically perform the same work functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires four years. So the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Many may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Lawrenceville GA area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Training Programs

Since the classes are made available via the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using various venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area Lawrenceville GA veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, for instance for commuting and study supplies, may be more affordable compared to more standard classroom programs. Just make sure that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online vet technician or assistant school may be the right option for you.

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Georgia as well as across the Country, you need to ask some relevant questions in order to fine tune your list of options. As we mentioned in our opening, many prospective students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already pointed out other essential qualifiers, such as internship programs and accreditation. And of course you want to choose a college that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are covered in the list of questions that you need to ask the Lawrenceville GA veterinary assistant and tech schools that you are considering.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the vet assistant or tech college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously mentioned, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous screening process that ensures you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not available for non-accredited programs. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is frequently a precondition for employment for a number of Lawrenceville GA veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary trade school or college and program you enroll in should have an excellent reputation within the veterinary community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include looking on online school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Georgia school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or infractions concerning your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, get in touch with some Lawrenceville GA veterinarians that you might want to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think about your school selections. They might even recommend one or more schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best way to get practical hands on training as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional setting. Ask if the colleges you are considering have internship programs arranged with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Almost all veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number provide it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable relative to the clinical training, but an internship can also help establish associations in the local Lawrenceville GA veterinarian community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet technician or assistant college may be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A lower rate might indicate that the teachers were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, check that the schools have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may indicate that the Lawrenceville GA program has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could indicate that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you may get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Lawrenceville GA colleges you are considering what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to sit in on a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Get feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Okay, we previously discussed location, but there are several more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to commute to your veterinary tech classes from home or work, you need to confirm that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Lawrenceville GA campus is located in or close by a large city. In addition, if you do opt to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes may be an option that will give you more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s important that you ascertain if the Georgia veterinary schools you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Others might only be able to attend class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you require are available near Lawrenceville GA before enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family issues. You might find that an online school is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary education into your active life.
