Part of your decision might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the principal factor will most likely be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the immediate direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are a number of duties that they can carry out within the Locust Grove GA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the typical veterinarian practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and education prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have gone through a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Locust Grove GA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more involved activities, for instance assisting with surgeries. Some of their typical responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians go through more advanced training compared to assistants and typically acquire a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are involved in more complicated activities, such as assisting with surgeries or providing medicine. All states currently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and basically perform the same job functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires four years to complete. So the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Some may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Locust Grove GA area research facilities as well.

Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenditures, such as for commuting and study materials, can be lower compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just make certain that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is included for a complete education. Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive review process that verifies you will get a quality education. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is often a precondition for employment for a number of Locust Grove GA veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or vocational school and program you choose should have an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian field. They might even suggest one or more schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best approach to obtain practical hands on training as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional environment. Ask if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable as far as the clinical training, but an internship can also help develop connections in the local Locust Grove GA vet community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant program can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A low rate may suggest that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that some students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the schools have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might signify that the Locust Grove GA program has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might signify that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you probably will get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Locust Grove GA colleges you are considering what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You may also decide to sit in on some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Get evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we already talked about location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the topic. If you are planning to commute to your vet technician classes from home or work, you need to confirm that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Locust Grove GA college is located close by or within a large city. In addition, if you do opt to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees particularly for state and community colleges. Of course taking classes online might be an option that will give you more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s imperative that you determine if the Georgia veterinarian colleges you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are available near Locust Grove GA before enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family responsibilities. You may find that an online program is the ideal way to fit your veterinary education into your hectic life.
