After all, you must find and enroll in a school that will provide the proper training to ensure that you can be successful as a veterinary technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you tackle reviewing and contrasting colleges so that you can make the ideal choice? Many aspiring students start their due diligence process by searching for campuses that are near their homes. After they have located some nearby colleges, they ascertain which ones have the cheapest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and expense are significant considerations when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your assessments. Qualifications such as internship programs and accreditation need to be looked into as well. The point is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make an ultimate decision. We have provided several within this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the different roles of veterinary assistants and techs and the training options offered.

The Job of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your decision might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your training, but the principal factor will undoubtedly be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are numerous functions that they can carry out within the Rockmart GA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose ailments, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the conventional veterinarian practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and education requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have gone through a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Rockmart GA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more involved activities, for example assisting with surgeries. A few of their usual responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training in contrast to assistants and typically earn a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are engaged in more complex activities, such as assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states presently mandate that vet technicians pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary techs and essentially perform the same work functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires 4 years to complete. So the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Some may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Rockmart GA area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Training Classes

attending vet tech school online in Rockmart GAAn alternative that may make sense for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full time while going to veterinarian school is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are offered over the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The syllabus is taught using several venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Rockmart GA veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, for instance for travel and study materials, can be cheaper compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just make sure that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent mode, an online vet technician or assistant program may be the perfect choice for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technician Degree Programs

Since there are a large number of vet community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Georgia as well as across the USA, you should ask some important questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our introduction, many future students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have already pointed out other essential qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you want to enroll in a school that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Rockmart GA vet technician and assistant colleges that you are considering.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the vet assistant or technician school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier mentioned, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous screening process that verifies you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is often a precondition for employment for a number of Rockmart GA vet practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinarian college or trade school and program you choose must have an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include looking on online school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Georgia school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions regarding your targeted schools. As a final recommendation, phone some Rockmart GA veterinarians that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They might even suggest some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best means to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a clinical environment. Find out if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs established with area veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the practical training, but an internship can also help build connections in the local Rockmart GA veterinarian community and aid in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet assistant or tech school may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A low rate might signify that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that some students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, verify that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may indicate that the Rockmart GA program has an excellent reputation within the vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could indicate that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you most likely will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Request from the Rockmart GA colleges you are looking at what their class student to teacher ratios are. You might also decide to participate in a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Okay, we already talked about location, but there are several more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to commute to your vet assistant classes from work or home, you must make certain that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Rockmart GA campus is located close by or within a large city. Also, if you do decide to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs especially for community and state colleges. Of course taking online classes could be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s important that you determine if the Georgia veterinarian schools you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Others may only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are offered near Rockmart GA prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss due to sickness, work or family issues. You might find that an online school is the best way to fit your vet training into your busy life.
