Many future students launch their due diligence process by looking for campuses that are near their homes. Although location and expense are significant concerns when evaluating vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your assessments. The point is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make an ultimate decision. We have provided several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the varied responsibilities of veterinary techs and assistants and the training alternatives offered.

The Job of a Veterinary Assistant and Tech

Part of your preference may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the principal determiner will undoubtedly be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the direct guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are numerous duties that they can carry out within the Bonners Ferry ID veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose health issues, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the typical veterinarian practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have undergone a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Bonners Ferry ID. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complicated undertakings, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their normal duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians go through more advanced training compared with assistants and generally earn a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complicated tasks, for example assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states currently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and for the most part perform the same work functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires 4 years to complete. So the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Some may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Bonners Ferry ID area research facilities also.

Vet Online Programs

attending vet tech school online in Bonners Ferry IDAn approach that may be a solution for those with a busy schedule or who are working full-time while attending veterinarian college is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are offered over the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using multiple methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Bonners Ferry ID veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary costs, for example for commuting and study supplies, may be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just make sure that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online veterinary tech or assistant school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Technologist Colleges

Since there are a large number of vet community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Idaho as well as across the Country, you must ask some relevant questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we discussed in our introduction, many potential students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have already mentioned other essential qualifiers, for example accreditation and internship programs. And of course you need to enroll in a college that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are addressed in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Bonners Ferry ID vet assistant and technician programs that you are looking at.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s imperative that you make sure that the vet tech or assistant school you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier mentioned, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding review process that confirms you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not available for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is frequently a precondition for employment for many Bonners Ferry ID veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The vet college or trade school and program you choose should have an outstanding reputation within the veterinary field. You can start your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include looking on internet school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Idaho school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions concerning your specific schools. As a final tip, call some Bonners Ferry ID veterinary clinics that you might wish to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They might even recommend some schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best way to get practical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional environment. Find out if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with regional veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the clinical training, but an internship can also help develop associations in the local Bonners Ferry ID vet community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant program can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A low rate might signify that the teachers were unqualified to teach the course of study or that some students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the schools have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may mean that the Bonners Ferry ID school has an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could signify that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you probably will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Bonners Ferry ID schools you are considering what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You may also decide to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we previously covered location, but there are a few more points to consider on the topic. If you are planning to commute to your veterinary assistant classes from home or work, you have to make sure that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Bonners Ferry ID school is located close by or within a large city. In addition, if you do choose to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs particularly for community and state colleges. Of course taking classes online could be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s imperative that you ascertain if the Idaho vet schools you are exploring offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some may only be able to attend class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you need are available near Bonners Ferry ID prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family responsibilities. You may find that an online college is the ideal way to fit your vet education into your active life.

A Little Bit About Bonners Ferry ID

Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Bonners Ferry is a city in and the county seat of Boundary County, Idaho, United States.[4] The population was 2,543 at the 2010 census.

When gold was discovered in the East Kootenays of British Columbia in 1863, thousands of prospectors from all over the West surged northward over a route that became known as the Wildhorse Trail. Edwin Bonner, a merchant from Walla Walla, Washington, established a ferry in 1864 where the trail crossed the broad Kootenai River. In 1875, Richard Fry, and his Sinixt wife, Justine Su-steel Fry, leased the business,[5] but the location retained the name of the original founder and later became the town of Bonners Ferry.

Before the gold rush, only a few visitors had come to the region; one of the first was explorer David Thompson, a cartographer for the North West Company. Thompson and four fellow fur traders arrived in 1808 to trade with the Lower Kootenais. Exhausted and famished[who?], the local natives gave Thompson's party dried fish and moss bread. Thompson returned the next year and established a trading post on Lake Pend Oreille. He was followed in 1846 by Jesuit Priest Father DeSmet, a missionary to the Kootenai Tribe.
