The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make a final choice. We have presented several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll go over the various roles of veterinary assistants and techs and the training alternatives offered.

The Role of a Veterinary Tech and Assistant

Part of your determination may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the principal determiner will undoubtedly be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they each work under the immediate guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are a number of tasks that they can perform within the Bartlett IL veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose ailments, or perform surgeries. In those areas they may only provide support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the typical vet practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and education requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have gone through a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Bartlett IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more complicated undertakings, for example assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their normal functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians receive more advanced training compared to assistants and normally earn a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are engaged in more involved duties, for instance assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states currently require vet technicians pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and basically perform the same work functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires four years. Therefore the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. A number may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Bartlett IL area research facilities as well.

Veterinary Online Colleges

attending vet tech school online in Bartlett ILAn approach that might make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending vet school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are provided over the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using various methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that part can typically be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Bartlett IL veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, such as for travel and study materials, can be cheaper compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just be sure that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent mode, an online vet technician or assistant program may be the right choice for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Degree Programs

Since there are a large number of vet community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Illinois and across the USA, you should ask some relevant questions in order to narrow down your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our opening, many future students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already mentioned other significant qualifiers, such as internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you want to enroll in a school that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are addressed in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Bartlett IL veterinary assistant and technician colleges that you are considering.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the veterinary tech or assistant college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier mentioned, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding review process that ensures you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not offered for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited college is in many cases a prerequisite for employment for a number of Bartlett IL vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinarian college or trade school and program you choose must have an exceptional reputation within the veterinary community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include checking with internet school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions regarding your specific schools. As a final pointer, call some Bartlett IL vet clinics that you might wish to work for after you get your training. Find out what they think of your school choices. They might even recommend some colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective approach to get clinical hands on training as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a medical environment. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs established with area veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs require practical training and a large number provide it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable regarding the clinical training, but an internship can also help build relationships in the local Bartlett IL veterinary community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet assistant or technician college may be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are considering. A lower rate could suggest that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the schools have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could signify that the Bartlett IL college has an exceptional reputation within the vet community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could indicate that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you most likely will get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Bartlett IL programs you are researching what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You may also want to sit in on some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Yes, we already talked about location, but there are a few more points to consider on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary assistant classes from work or home, you have to confirm that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Bartlett IL school is located in or close by a larger city. Also, if you do choose to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges especially for community and state colleges. On the other hand, attending classes online could be an option that will give you more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s important that you ascertain if the Illinois veterinary schools you are looking at offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some might only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you require are offered near Bartlett IL prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family issues. You might discover that an online program is the best solution to fit your veterinary education into your busy life.
