Part of your determination might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the principal factor will most likely be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the direct guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are numerous functions that they can carry out within the Danville IL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose ailments, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they may only provide support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the conventional veterinarian practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and education prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have completed a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Danville IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more complex tasks, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their normal responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians receive more extensive training in contrast to assistants and generally earn a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more involved tasks, such as assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states presently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes four years. So the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. A number may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Danville IL area research facilities as well.

Vet Online Degree Programs

Because the classes are offered over the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using various venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most vet tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that part can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Danville IL veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenditures, for instance for commuting and study supplies, can be cheaper compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just confirm that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet technician or assistant school may be the ideal option for you.

Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Illinois as well as across the United States, you must ask some qualifying questions in order to fine tune your list of options. As we discussed in our introduction, many potential students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already mentioned other important qualifiers, such as accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you want to choose a college that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the list of questions that you should ask the Danville IL vet technician and assistant colleges that you are considering.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s essential that you confirm that the veterinary assistant or tech college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier stated, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through an extensive review process that confirms you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not available for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is in many cases a prerequisite for employment for a number of Danville IL veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinarian trade school or college and program you enroll in should have an exceptional reputation within the veterinary field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include checking with online school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing department if there have been any grievances or violations regarding your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, get in touch with some Danville IL vet clinics that you may want to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think about your school selections. They may even suggest some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective means to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a clinical setting. Find out if the programs you are looking at have internship programs established with regional veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the practical training, but an internship can also help develop connections in the local Danville IL veterinarian community and assist in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or technician college can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are reviewing. A low rate might suggest that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might signify that the Danville IL school has an excellent reputation within the vet community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might signify that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you probably will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Danville IL colleges you are considering what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to participate in a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Get evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Okay, we already discussed location, but there are several more points to consider on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary technician classes from home or work, you have to confirm that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Danville IL school is located in or near a large city. Also, if you do decide to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees particularly for community and state colleges. Of course attending online classes may be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and reduce the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s essential that you determine if the Illinois veterinary programs you are looking at offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Others might only be able to go to class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are offered near Danville IL before enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family responsibilities. You may discover that an online college is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary education into your busy life.

A Little Bit About Danville IL

Danville, Illinois

Danville is a city in and the county seat[5] of Vermilion County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 33,027.[3]

Danville was founded in 1827 on 60 acres (240,000 m2) of land donated by Guy W. Smith and 20 acres (81,000 m2) donated by Dan W. Beckwith.[6] The sale of lots was set for April 10, 1827 and advertised in newspapers in Indianapolis, Indiana and the state capital of Vandalia.[1] The first post office was established in May of the same year in the house of Amos Williams, organizer of Vermilion and Edgar Counties and a prominent Danville citizen. Williams and Beckwith drew up the first plat map; the city was named after Dan Beckwith at Williams' suggestion, although Beckwith suggested the names "Williamsburg" and "Williamstown". Beckwith was born in Pennsylvania in 1795 and moved to Indiana as a young man; in 1819 he accompanied the first white explorers to the area where Danville later existed because of his interest in the salt springs of the Vermilion River. He died in 1835 of pneumonia contracted on a horseback ride back from Washington; he was 40 years old.[7] Danville became a major industrial city in the late 19th and early twentieth centuries. From the 1850s to the 1940s, Danville was an important coal mining area; some of the first open pit mining techniques were practiced here.[8] The coal formation underlying eastern Illinois and western Indiana is named the "Danville Member," after the area where it was first discovered.[9] With the closure of the mines and many factories, Danville's economic base suffered in the latter half of the 20th century. The former mines were converted into lakes, creating fishing and recreation opportunities at parks such as Kickapoo State Recreation Area and Kennekuk Cove County Park.[citation needed]

Danville is located approximately 120 miles (190 km) south of Chicago, 35 miles (56 km) east of Champaign-Urbana, and 90 miles (140 km) west of Indianapolis, Indiana. Illinois Route 1, U.S. Route 136, and U.S. Route 150 intersect in Danville; Interstate 74 passes through the south end of town. Lake Vermilion is located on the northwest side of town.
