The Job of a Veterinary Tech and Assistant

Part of your decision may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the primary factor will most likely be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are numerous functions that they can perform within the Fox Lake IL veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose conditions, or perform surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the standard veterinarian practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have gone through a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Fox Lake IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complicated activities, such as assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their usual functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more advanced training compared to assistants and typically earn a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complex tasks, such as assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states presently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and basically carry out the same job functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires four years to complete. Therefore the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Some may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Fox Lake IL area research facilities also.

Veterinarian Online Programs

The syllabus is taught using multiple venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that segment can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Fox Lake IL veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenditures, such as for traveling and study materials, may be more affordable compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just be sure that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant fashion, an online veterinary tech or assistant program may be the right option for you.

And of course you need to enroll in a school that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are addressed in the list of questions that you should ask the Fox Lake IL vet technician and assistant programs that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s essential that you verify that the veterinary technician or assistant college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier mentioned, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a thorough screening process that verifies you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is frequently a precondition for employment for many Fox Lake IL veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The vet vocational school or college and program you select must have an exceptional reputation within the vet community. You can start your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include checking with online school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing department if there have been any grievances or infractions relating to your specific schools. As a final recommendation, get in touch with some Fox Lake IL veterinary clinics that you may want to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think of your school selections. They may even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective way to get clinical hands on training as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a clinical setting. Find out if the schools you are considering have internship programs set up with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable relative to the clinical training, but an internship may also help build associations in the local Fox Lake IL veterinarian community and assist in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or technician school can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are reviewing. A lower rate might signify that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, verify that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could signify that the Fox Lake IL program has an excellent reputation within the veterinary community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may signify that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you may receive little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Fox Lake IL colleges you are looking at what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You may also want to attend some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Of course, we already covered location, but there are several more points to make on the topic. If you are going to drive to your veterinary assistant classes from work or home, you must make certain that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Fox Lake IL campus is located close by or within a large city. Also, if you do decide to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending classes online might be an option that will give you more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s important that you determine if the Illinois veterinary colleges you are considering offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you need are available near Fox Lake IL prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss as a result of work, sickness or family issues. You might find that an online program is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary education into your busy life.
