The Role of a Veterinary Assistant and Tech

Part of your decision may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the main factor will most likely be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the immediate direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are numerous jobs that they can carry out within the Mascoutah IL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose health issues, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the conventional vet practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and education requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Mascoutah IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more involved tasks, such as assisting with surgeries. A few of their usual duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians go through more extensive training compared to assistants and typically acquire a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more involved functions, such as assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states currently mandate that veterinary technicians pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes 4 years. Therefore the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Many may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Mascoutah IL area research facilities also.

Veterinarian Online Colleges

Because the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The syllabus is taught using multiple venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that part can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area Mascoutah IL veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenditures, for example for commuting and study materials, may be more affordable compared to more standard classroom courses. Just be sure that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online veterinary technician or assistant program may be the right choice for you.

Since there are a large number of vet community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Illinois as well as across the USA, you should ask some relevant questions to help fine tune your list of options. As we mentioned in our opening, many future students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have already mentioned other important qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you want to select a college that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Mascoutah IL vet assistant and technician colleges that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the veterinary assistant or tech program you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously mentioned, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous review process that confirms you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not offered for non-accredited schools. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is in many cases a prerequisite for employment for a number of Mascoutah IL veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or trade school and program you choose must have an excellent reputation within the veterinary field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include checking with online school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations regarding your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, phone some Mascoutah IL veterinarians that you might wish to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They might even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best means to get clinical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a medical setting. Find out if the programs you are looking at have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Most veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the practical training, but an internship may also help develop relationships in the local Mascoutah IL veterinary community and assist in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant school may be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are reviewing. A low rate might signify that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, verify that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could mean that the Mascoutah IL program has an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might signify that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you most likely will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Mascoutah IL colleges you are looking at what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You might also want to participate in some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Yes, we already talked about location, but there are several more points to consider on the subject. If you are going to commute to your veterinary technician classes from home or work, you need to confirm that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Mascoutah IL school is located in or close by a large city. In addition, if you do decide to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes could be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s imperative that you ascertain if the Illinois vet schools you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some might only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are offered near Mascoutah IL prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss as a result of work, sickness or family responsibilities. You might discover that an online program is the best solution to fit your veterinary education into your hectic life.
