But just how do you tackle assessing and contrasting programs so that you can make the ideal selection? Many aspiring students start their due diligence process by looking for schools that are near their homes. Once they have found some nearby colleges, they ascertain which ones have the most affordable tuition and hone in on those. Although expense and location are important considerations when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only critical ones when making your comparisons. Factors such as accreditation and internship programs should be considered as well. The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make a final choice. We have provided several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll explore the varied responsibilities of vet assistants and techs and the training options offered.

The Role of a Vet Assistant and Tech

Part of your preference may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the main factor will probably be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are numerous functions that they can perform within the Melrose Park IL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose conditions, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the conventional vet practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have completed a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Melrose Park IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complicated activities, such as assisting with surgeries. Some of their usual duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training compared with assistants and usually earn a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their basic job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated functions, for example assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states currently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet technicians and essentially carry out the same work functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally takes four years to complete. So the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. A number may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Melrose Park IL area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Courses

attending vet tech school online in Melrose Park ILAn option that may be a solution for those with a busy schedule or who are working full time while going to vet college is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are offered via the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The syllabus is taught using several methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can typically be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Melrose Park IL veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary costs, for example for commuting and study supplies, can be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just make sure that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is included for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online vet technician or assistant program may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Colleges

Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Illinois as well as across the USA, you must ask some relevant questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our opening, many potential students start by concentrating on location and tuition expense. But we have previously pointed out other significant qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And of course you want to select a college that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Melrose Park IL vet technician and assistant schools that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the veterinary assistant or tech college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier mentioned, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a thorough screening process that confirms you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not available for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited college is frequently a precondition for employment for a number of Melrose Park IL veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or vocational school and program you choose should have an exceptional reputation within the vet community. You can start your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include looking on online school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations relating to your specific schools. As a final suggestion, contact some Melrose Park IL veterinary clinics that you may want to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They might even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective approach to get clinical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a clinical environment. Ask if the programs you are looking at have internship programs arranged with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable as far as the clinical training, but an internship can also help build associations in the local Melrose Park IL veterinarian community and help in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Provided?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant college can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A lower rate may indicate that the teachers were unqualified to teach the course of study or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may mean that the Melrose Park IL school has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could signify that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you most likely will get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Melrose Park IL colleges you are considering what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to attend some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and teachers. Get feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Okay, we already discussed location, but there are a few more points to consider on the topic. If you are planning to drive to your vet assistant classes from home or work, you need to make certain that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Melrose Park IL campus is located near or in a large city. Also, if you do opt to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges especially for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes could be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s imperative that you find out if the Illinois veterinary programs you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to attend class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you require are available near Melrose Park IL before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you might miss because of work, sickness or family emergencies. You may discover that an online college is the best solution to fit your vet education into your hectic life.

Melrose Park, Illinois

Melrose Park is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is a suburb of Chicago,14 miles by road. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 25,411.[3] Melrose Park had long been home to a large Italian-American population.

The suburb was the home of Kiddieland Amusement Park from 1929 until 2010 (it closed in September 2009 before it was demolished), the Shrine of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, and Stern Pinball, Inc., which is now the world's last manufacturer of coin-operated pinball machines.[4]

According to the Encyclopedia of Chicago, in 1882 residents of a then-unincorporated portion of Proviso Township voted to establish their own municipality—called simply "Melrose" until 1893, when the "Park" was added—and population in the area began to steadily increase. The first Italian-Americans arrived in 1888. On April 19, 1920, the F4 Palm Sunday tornado cut a 328-foot-wide (100 m) path over 1,094 yards (1,000 m) through the village and killed ten people. It destroyed the Sacred Heart Church and attached convent.[5]
