The point is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make a final choice. We have presented several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll go over the varied roles of veterinary assistants and techs and the training alternatives offered.

The Function of a Veterinary Assistant and Technician

Part of your preference might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the main determiner will most likely be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the direct direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are a number of duties that they can perform within the Villa Grove IL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose ailments, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the typical vet practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and training prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have gone through a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Villa Grove IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more complex tasks, such as assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their normal responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training compared with assistants and normally obtain a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are involved in more complex activities, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or administering medicine. All states currently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet technicians and essentially perform the same job functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes four years. Therefore the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Some may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Villa Grove IL area research facilities as well.

Vet Online Training Classes

attending vet tech school online in Villa Grove ILAn approach that may make sense for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full time while going to veterinarian school is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are provided through the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The curriculum is taught using several venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Villa Grove IL veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenditures, for example for commuting and study materials, can be lower compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just make sure that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is furnished for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet technician or assistant school may be the perfect option for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technologist Programs

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Illinois and across the United States, you should ask some relevant questions in order to fine tune your list of options. As we mentioned in our introduction, many potential students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have already mentioned other important qualifiers, such as internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to select a program that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Villa Grove IL vet assistant and tech programs that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s important that you make sure that the veterinary assistant or tech college you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier discussed, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a demanding screening process that ensures you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not obtainable for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is in many cases a prerequisite for employment for many Villa Grove IL veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary vocational school or college and program you choose must have an excellent reputation within the vet field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include looking on internet school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing department if there have been any grievances or infractions concerning your specific schools. As a final tip, phone some Villa Grove IL veterinarians that you may want to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They might even recommend some colleges not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best approach to obtain clinical hands on experience as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a medical environment. Ask if the programs you are looking at have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require practical training and a large number provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable as far as the practical training, but an internship can also help establish connections in the local Villa Grove IL veterinary community and help in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Provided?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or technician college can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A lower rate could signify that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the colleges have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might signify that the Villa Grove IL program has an excellent reputation within the veterinary community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could signify that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you may receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Villa Grove IL schools you are researching what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to participate in some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Get feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and determine what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we previously talked about location, but there are a few more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your veterinary tech classes from work or home, you need to make certain that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Villa Grove IL college is located close by or within a larger city. In addition, if you do decide to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs particularly for community and state colleges. Of course attending classes online could be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s important that you determine if the Illinois vet programs you are looking at offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Others may only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are available near Villa Grove IL prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you might miss because of work, sickness or family responsibilities. You may discover that an online school is the best way to fit your veterinary training into your busy life.

A Little Bit About Villa Grove IL

Villa Grove, Illinois

Villa Grove is a city in Douglas County, Illinois, along the Embarras River. The population was 2,537 at the 2010 census.

Villa Grove was chartered in 1903 after the area was recognized by the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad (C&EI) as being exactly halfway between Chicago and St. Louis. This made it a desirable location for a steam locomotive repair facility.[3] Villa Grove later became the site of a C&EI division headquarters and roundhouse.[4] Villa Grove was also known for its Pancake Festivals in the 1940s, which drew crowds over 10,000. In the 1970s, the festival was replaced by the Ag Days celebration.[3] In 1923, Villa Grove's high school basketball team, the Blue Devils, defeated Rockford 32-29 to win the Illinois High School Boys Basketball Championship.[5]

Villa Grove's historic rail depot was demolished in the predawn hours of Friday, October 29, 1976 despite a city ordinance that was intended to protect the structure.[6] The city later received reparation for the destruction.[3]
