The Role of a Veterinary Assistant and Tech

Part of your decision may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your training, but the main factor will probably be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the direct supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are numerous functions that they can perform within the Torrington WY veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose ailments, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the conventional veterinarian practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have undergone a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Torrington WY. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more complicated tasks, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their regular functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or handling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training compared with assistants and generally obtain a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are involved in more involved tasks, such as assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states presently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and basically carry out the same job functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally takes 4 years to complete. Therefore the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Torrington WY area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in Torrington WYAn option that may make sense for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending veterinarian school is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are offered through the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using multiple methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can usually be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Torrington WY veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenditures, such as for commuting and study materials, can be cheaper compared to more standard classroom programs. Just make sure that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online veterinary tech or assistant school may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Tech Programs

Since there are a large number of vet community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Wyoming and across the USA, you need to ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our opening, many future students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have already mentioned other significant qualifiers, such as accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you need to choose a college that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Torrington WY vet assistant and tech programs that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s essential that you make sure that the vet assistant or tech college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously stated, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through an extensive screening process that confirms you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is often a precondition for employment for a number of Torrington WY vet practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The vet college or trade school and program you choose must have an outstanding reputation within the vet field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include checking with online school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Wyoming school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions relating to your targeted schools. As a final tip, get in touch with some Torrington WY veterinarians that you may wish to work for after you get your training. Find out what they think about your school selections. They may even recommend some schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective means to get practical hands on training as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a clinical environment. Ask if the schools you are considering have internship programs established with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Almost all veterinary medicine programs require practical training and many furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable as far as the practical training, but an internship may also help develop connections in the local Torrington WY vet community and assist in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Provided?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet assistant or technician program may be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A low rate might suggest that the teachers were unqualified to teach the course of study or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and quit. Next, verify that the schools have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might signify that the Torrington WY school has an exceptional reputation within the veterinary community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might indicate that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you probably will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Torrington WY schools you are considering what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You may also decide to attend some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Of course, we previously covered location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your vet technician classes from work or home, you must confirm that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Torrington WY campus is located in or near a large city. In addition, if you do choose to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges particularly for community and state colleges. Of course attending classes online may be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s essential that you determine if the Wyoming veterinary schools you are looking at offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are available near Torrington WY prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family issues. You might discover that an online program is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary training into your active life.
